Teas on the website

1 June 2017

At long last, our range of teas and fruit/herbal infusions is now available to order on the website. The teas are mainly packaged in 100g bags but due to their bulk we have decided to package the Chamomile Flower and Peppermint teas in 50g bags. Some of the products are also available as pyramid teabags. Please note that the teas are all individually priced. We intend to offer tea gift packs later in the year once we have had the opportunity to see which items are most popular.

Teas and coffees can be purchased on the same order and the delivery charge will be based on the total number of bags ordered. Delivery of our Coffee gift bags will still be charged at 3.50 each.

New Coffee - Sumatra Lake Takengon

18 May 2017

We have added a new Sumatran coffee to our product list. Lake Takengon effectively replaces the Sumatra Gegarang Village and Sumatra Jagong Village coffees that we have roasted in the past and the current crop of Lake Takengon is considered to be of superior quality to both of these. The coffee is full-bodied with flavours of orange, nutmeg, clove, raw honey and sweet tobacco.

Takengon is a remote town situated in the region of Aceh, deep in the Gayo Highlands of northern Sumatra, an area famed for coffee production. It has beautiful scenery, and is known for the lush mountainous terrain that surrounds small fishing communities around Lake Taut Tawar. Our Lake Takengon coffee is produced in the area around Lampahan, a small coffee producing town that sits to the north-west of the lake between 1300 and 1400 masl. There are approximately 400 smallholder producers in the area, each cultivating coffee on farms with an average size of 1 hectare each.

New Coffee - Rwanda Nkora 4210

18 May 2017

Our supply of Rwanda Inzovu is now exhausted and to replace it we have just taken delivery of a new batch of Rwanda Nkora (lot 4210) to replace it. We previously roasted Rwanda Nkora in 2016 until supplies ran out. The coffee is medium/strong with flavours of plum jam with orange and cacao.

Nkora was the very first washing station to open and operate in Rwanda in 1957, and processed 786 tons of coffee cherries in 2016. The mill is now powered by a nearby micro-hydro power station, meaning it is run on renewable energy. In addition, Nkora sustains, staffs and operates a 66 student pre-school for the surrounding community that is entirely funded by proceeds from the washing station. Approximately 4,400 farmers deliver to the washing station, from a collection area with an altitude range between 1500 and 1750 metres above sea level.

Derby Food Assembly

18 May 2017

We are now suppliers to the Derby Food Assembly. For anyone not familiar with Food Assemblies, the idea is that customers can purchase locally produced products from a range of providers weekly via a central webshop and then simply collect all of their purchases from a single location. In the case of the Derby Assembly, for example, the on-line market is open each week from Wednesday to Sunday and customers collect all of their purchases from The Greyhound pub on Ashbourne Road in Derby on the following Tuesday evening between 5.30pm and 7.30pm. In this way customers can enjoy local produce such as meat, bread, cheese, eggs, milk, vegetables, coffee, tea etc. without having to visit all of the suppliers separately.

I am pleased to announce the addition of a 2nd decaf coffee to our product range. The coffee is an equal mixture of Nicaragua Matagalpa and El Salvador SHG beans and is de-caffeinated using the Carbon Dioxide Process. It is a smooth, slightly sweet coffee with a little acidity. Please give it a try and let me know what you think of it compared to our Colombian Decaf. I hope to increase our range of decaffeinated coffees later in the year.

Change to website - New grind options available

11 July 2016

We have now increased the number of grind options available for our coffees when ordered via the web shop. All of our coffees may now be ordered as extra fine ground for use when making Turkish coffee. We have also added a 'medium' ground option to cater for customers who find that our fine grind is too fine but the coarse grind is too coarse. We hope that this enables you to more closely match the grind of your coffee with the coffee making equipment that you use. Let us know if you would like any additional grind options but please be aware that the best way to ensure that your coffee is ground exactly to your requirements is to purchase our coffee as whole beans and grind it using your own burr grinder.

More good news - drinking coffee can help you stay slim after dieting

23 November 2015

An article in the Daily Mail on 21 November 2015 reported on findings published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition by a research team at Hannover Medical School in Germany. They have discovered that a regular intake of 2 to 4 cups of coffee a day appears to help dieters stay trim; the high caffeine content seems to help the body resist the gradual weight gain that defeats so many slimmers. Researchers studied the consumption habits of 494 men and women who were taking part in a weight loss study. They found that successful slimmers consumed significantly more coffee - 2 to 4 cups a day on average - than those who lost no weight or lost it and then put the pounds back on.

Good news - coffee drinking may help you live longer

19 November 2015

I came across an article in the i newspaper on 17 November 2015 written by John von Radowitz in which he said that according to new research, drinking 3 - 5 cups of coffee a day might help you live longer. Research carried out at the Harvard T H Chan School of Public Health in the US and published in the journal 'Circulation' claims that moderate coffee consumption reduces the risk of dying prematurely from heart disease, neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, and Type 2 diabetes. Whether the coffee drunk contained caffeine or not made no difference; the benefits are thought to be linked to other plant compounds in coffee besides caffeine. The results are from analysis of 3 large on-going studies with a total of 208,501 male and female participants.
